I was just in Rabat for warden training. Basically wardens are a Peace Corps Volunteer that would act as the voice of reason in the case of an Emergency. They know the Emergency Action plan and until a Peace Corps staff member arrived at a consolidation point they would be checking and double checking that everyone was there and things were otherwise in order.
So I was there along with all the other wardens and we discussed our regions in Morocco along with what happens in the event of x, y and z. My main critique of the whole meeting was that we didn’t discuss Zombie Apocalypse nearly enough.. hopefully WHEN the time comes, everyone will know to turn to me… their part zombie PCV friend Rachida.
While in Rabat there were some other friends up there and we all made it into the American Club. The American Club is a restaurant that is near the Embassy that has all American products and things like alcohol and bacon. Even during Ramadan. It was a great feeling to be on American soil for a little while

While in Rabat one of our only daytime options for food was McDonalds. They apparently have a policy during Ramadan though that they will not serve Muslims food. It’s interesting because the only basis for that identification is by the way that we look. Myself an my other “white” friend had no issues, but when our friend Dipesh ordered at McDonalds the cashier spoke with her manager about it. Dipesh is of Indian descent (and pictured above) and he’s not Muslim. Just an interesting cultural detail about Morocco during Ramadan
Now I am traveling back to site and waiting for the 4PM bus to Ouarzazate. Transportation is getting hard to come by because Ramadan is ending and everyone is traveling back home. So today I’m hoping to be able to get to my friend Aly’s site so we can make delicious nachos and maybe even pizza and banana bread
(with bananas!)
This afternoon I had lunch at a lovely restaurant here in Marrakech called Earth Cafe. It’s a PCV favorite for vegetarian and vegan food. It’s just a really overall cute establishment.
That’s it for now. Not too exciting, but summer is a pretty slow time for anything. I’ll be going to Oktoberfest in less than a month! I also will hopefully start back at Dar Chebab by September 1st.

It makes sense that the Captain of the safety patrol in fifth grade would be a warden in the Peace Corps. Carry on!
Mom! I’ve just finished downloading season 1 of Project Runway. It reminds me of you! Make it work!
Great post, Rachel. The racial/religious profiling at McDonalds is too rich! The Earth Cafe is the most comforting thing I’ve experienced in all of your recounts. Where will you be for Octoberfest? Did I miss you mentioning it in a previous post?
Love,
T
I”ll be in Munich for Oktoberfest! I’m going with three of my Peace Corps girlfriends to celebrate one year in country and also my 26th birthday. It’s going to be awesome. I’m spending a few days at a friends site and she is from Washington. It is her mission in life to move me there. Wanna be neighbors?
Hey girl friend! That is all so interesting. We ate at McDonalds for the first 4 days when getting to AU. It’s funny, they really are everywhere. I haven’t been back since. (ok I bought a apple pie once since- It was $2.50 for 1!!! Anyway. I love you and I hope you have a great time at Oktoberfest.
Gabbbbyyyyyyy! Is your year almost over in Australia? When do you head back?
We should try skyping soon.
Yet another post of your fat ass missing America and stuffing your face with your fellow American “volunteers”. I hope you work *sometime* or ever. Good to see where our tax dollars are going.
