Peace Corps 50th Anniversary Photo Contest

Peace Corps 50th Anniversary Photo Contest

Here are my entries (worldwide and Morocco specific) with captions!

While still in training, PCV Rachel Rubinski was taken to 3 weddings in her small community based training site. At these weddings volunteers have the opportunity to interact with a large number of community members, learn about traditional dances and foods, and work on their language skills.

PCV Rachel Rubinski shows the judges the time for Omar, the athlete who she timed in the 100m dash. PCVs participated in the Special Olympics Morocco program for the first time in 2011.

After two months of living with the Beqqas family in a small town outside of Fes, PCV Rachel Rubinski went back to visit. They maintain a close relationship, and are truly the best host family and teachers a PCV could have asked for

Environment PCV Maggie Barnes is helping two campers
from the Tinghrir English Immersion camp across the river in a gorge.

Small Business Development PCV Jeff Palmer stepped
outside of his comfort zone when he volunteered to be a counselor in
the English Language Immersion Camp in Tinghrir, Morocco. Always
calling him by his Moroccan name “Jawad”, He quickly bonded with many
of the students because he speaks Amazite. The camper in the photo is
known to us PCVs as Fat Tony. He is an amazing English speaker and
overall brilliant kid. Many PCVs are working with him now on his YES!
Scholarship application, so that he can go study in America.

Youth Development PCV Rachel Rubinski, helping
some students in an advanced English class during a spelling
competition. Rachel was also the coordinator of this English Immersion
Camp in Tinghrir, Morocco.

Photo shows PCV Rachel Rubinski with two of
her host sisters Samira and Hafsa. Located in the southern part of the
country, days are often spent in the oasis of the palmerie. On this
particular day the girls were taught how in America we sometimes make wishes on dandelions.

So do we think there’s a winning photo in the bunch? Winning pictures could get displayed a variety of places, like the DC office the PC Morocco office, used in training books and manuels, or in advertisements.

  1. For simply being a beautiful photo I like the dandelion blowing shot. I also like the walking with the family photo. You’ve had some great adventures your first year as a PCV. Are you sure they wouldn’t be interested in your camel reaction or monkey photos?

  2. The dandelion shot will certainly win, and I vote to submit the monkey and camel photos too. Nice job, Rachel! I’ve got photos to send, soon I promise. Take care and hope you’re staying cool :)

    • Thanks Aunt Therese! It might actually be cooling down a little bit. Which is great because it’s Ramadan and everyone (including me) is fasting. I’m open to drinking water though (in my house) if I start feeling too bad. So far I’ve been pretty successful with the fasting except for the days that I was traveling (but you are allowed to drink and eat on those days if you go over 350k, techinically you should make those days up later butttt….) It’s an interesting cultural experience. I should do another blog entry about it.

Have internet in my house is AWESOME!
