Monkeys in Marrakech

Monkeys in Marrakech

I am updating from Casablanca, we are traveling towards another city on the coast for Summer Camp! Whooo Hooo! We’ll be at camp for about 12 days, then I’ll be heading back down south to spend a week working at an orphanage near Marrakech. Anything to get out of the intense heat of the desert.

Before I left The Christmas Village though, I did manage to brave the outdoors and attend a wedding.

This is pretty typical wedding food, sheep and olive tagine

This was the cous cous we had at the wedding, I’ve never had cous cous at a wedding before this one.

My sisters Khadija and Hafsa wearing their new beautiful shirts from America!

Random shot my sister took. They were singing with the drums. This was during break time, we had lunch and then a lot of the ladies left and returned a few hours later.

A lot of the children at the wedding .They LOVE when I pull out my camera. I couldn’t get an individual shot of one of them if my life depended on it!

The tiniest jellabas! So precious. They sat with me the whole time I was there :)

My sister Samira in her shirt from America.

Weddings last for days at a time. This one was right up the street from my apartment and it went on for about 3 days. I was just there for about 5 hours. I had one meal and stayed for some of the dancing and that was it. I never got to see the bride, but I didn’t know her so I felt okay leaving. I Just wanted to visit with my family and see them get all dressed up.

I did acquire some photos taken right before my trip to America that I wanted to share. They are of the monkeys in Marrakech! Before I took these pictures I watched the men and the monkeys for a while. The men are actually very gentle with them and were giving them fresh fruit and veggies the whole time I watched them. The monkeys were acting just like little children and seemed happy. They have an umbrella to hang out under when they aren’t being photographed and they actually know some tricks. If I thought these monkeys were being mistreated I would NOT of had my picture with them or supported the business.

This monkey is named Marco, and he took a bite out of the boarding passes I had just printed for my trip. Best friends for life.

Who wants to visit me and Marco?

  1. I was so happy to see you when you were home. Roseann sends her love. She taught me how to make “real” meatballs yesterday. I am glad you are getting away from the heat for a while. I love the pictures of your little sisters. How fun! I am ready to start school. I can’t wait. I love the “new” year. We will see how I feel in December :)

  2. I want to visit!! The children are all so beautiful. I think you were very brave to hold two monkeys at once. Seems like you should keep a hand free in case you need to defend yourself. They did seem to adore you.
