Right before I headed to America we had one of our final trainings that Peace Corps will offer myself and the other PCVs who came this September. Known as In Service Training or IST, we focused on successes that we have all had at our Dar Chebabs and other larger projects with various clubs, cross sector collaboration, and camps. In addition to these informational sessions myself and Katy Howell Burke took it upon ourselves to organize some social events. Most notably we had dodgeball, a watermelon eating contest, a dance auction and prom.
This is me subbing in during a dodgeball game. My knees were killing me the day after, but it was great.
Watermelon eating contest. No one died from water overdose. Our victor was LACIE (representing the Sunshine State!)
The beloved social coordinators themselves at prom, Rachida and Katy.
My prom date was AWOL, so Jo and I hung out a lot that night. (Strange right?)

Molly brought awesome clothes from SPAIN! This is us managing to be seen with the prom KING himself, Mr. Ross Wood.
Featured here in pink in the fourth and final lovely lady attending Oktoberfest with me, Molly, and Jo in September of this year. Adriennnneeeee!
I don’t have photos of the dance auction, but we auctioned off a dance with many of our eligible bachelors. Yes, it was as awkward as it sounds but it was fun too. The funds from the auction paid for the refreshments at prom. The highest single dance went to Maureen Sieh who purchased a dance from Josh Voges. Who can blame her though! WORTH IT!

So you went to morocco to participate in high school again? Congratulations!
I’m not sure what the point of this comment was supposed to be… However, prom was really fun for myself and the other PCVs at the training event. I joined Peace Corps and came to Morocco for a lot of reasons, obviously not to relive my adolescence. After being in site and surrounded by another culture for weeks and months at a time, it’s nice to cut loose a little when you are around American friends who know what things like dodgeball, prom and competitive eating are. I’m sorry if you don’t do similar things at your training events, because it’s nice to enjoy your Peace Corps service for a variety of reasons.
Disappointed because… no extracurricular activities were planned during your training sessions and you were therefore resigned to trolling the internet looking for examples of people having fun so you could live vicariously through them. I understand. Too bad Rachel wasnt in your staj, you would have enjoyed it all the more. Better luck next time.
As someone who both works hard in her site, and participated in these social activities, I can vouch for their legitimacy (read: you weren’t there, you don’t know). And if you spend the entirety of your time in your site devoted to completing projects, then you have my complete admiration; but I doubt you do that. We work extremely hard to complete sustainable projects and activities, so if we want to eat watermelon to relax, that’s our business, not yours. Go take your bitterness out on someone else.
