Lots has been going on since my last post! I returned to site after Special Olympics, to get packed and ready to visit America! I picked up necessary (and unnecessary) souveniers, got traditional Saraha henna, and headed up to a beach town near Rabat for a week long training (IST). We hung out near the beach and learned a little about the new path that Peace Corps Morocco will be taking.
Generally now we have volunteers enter the country twice per year, in September you have Youth Development and Small Business Development, and in March you have Health and Environment volunteers. Peace Corps has decided to transition to making the whole country Youth Development. There are mixed feeling on the switch but it’s happening. So we learned about that and heard about new work opportunities that are presenting themselves because of the switch. I’m really hoping I can work with the Small Business Development group in putting together some craft fairs with the local artisans. I love that sort of thing! During training we had quite a few social events organized by yours truly, including a dodgeball tournament, watermelon eating contest, and a Prom! It was tons of fun and I don’t have any pictures right now because my camera battery is dead and my charger is packed away or lost or something.
I’ll get some pics off of facebook eventually.
Right now I am updating from the airport in Spain. I had a night here on my way back to the states. I was lucky enough to be able to meet up with my old friend Asa. We were the President and Vice President of the Heavy Metal Enthusiasts club at UCF. Good times. Asa took me around to various bars in Madrid where we ate pork (so amazing.) and drank beer (equally amazing.) It was a great time and so far I think Madrid is a really great city. I have unfortunately forgotten all the Spanish I ever learned. When I try to speak it all comes out in Arabic. Who thought this day would come? LoL
All I can say is right now I feel a little like a homeless foreigner. I have tons of Moroccan henna on my hands and my clothing still errors on the side of conservative. I just spent like 11 euros on american candy, and regretted the decision because I don’t think I’ll actually eat it. My flight is a little delayed right now…but I think I need to get in line.
See you all in America later today!
